Differentiating song sections: a coda
Apropos of last week’s post on thinking of the sections of your song classically, I got this clarifying thought from a mastodon friend:
From both classical and contemporary music, I recognize the idea of adding variations to repeated parts; but for some reason I never made the jump to treating each part more independently, even if it is the same type as a previous part. For example, verse 2 compared to verse 1. This is a really interesting idea for me because I've struggled to get this variation into my songs.
And I just want to add: I think it’s important to have variation between parts especially if it's the same type as a previous part! For example, verse 2 compared to verse 1.
To me, the parts that are in the most danger of feeling the same are the parts that are in the most need of differentiation.
