Four simple questions for focusing in on your EQ
Here are four basic beginning points for thinking about a sound you’re working on. If you start here, you will fix your broad-stroke issues first, which is a huge win; then you can get focused on any remaining issues (which would presumably be in the midrange!)
Is there too much low end?
Is there not enough low end?
Is there too much high end?
Is there not enough high end?
Play your song through and focus on just one sound, and concentrate on each of these questions in turn. If you answer “yes” to any of them, adjust your EQ until it’s no longer a yes. You could probably start with shelving EQ.
And then move on to the next sound! If you work your way through your song using this process, you will have a more cohesive-sounding mix at the end of it.
