"How can I help?"
Wow, thanks for asking! Here is a short list of ways you can help support and grow this experimental email project that you are a part of.
Recommend it to specific people who you think would like it. Note that I didn’t say “share Jamie’s list” … sharing doesn’t help. Everyone’s overwhelmed and the world is careening past them on their phone at the rate of one thought every 10 seconds. No one will notice your earnest Jamie’s list pitch. Plus algorithms don’t like people promoting things without them getting a cut. So sharing doesn’t work.
Recommending is different; it’s sending a personal message to someone who you specifically think would appreciate this resource, telling them why you think that.
So if you have anyone in your life who you think would appreciate Jamie’s list … tell them that! Are you a student at an art school or a music school? I know at least a couple of you are. If this is you: tell your professors and fellow students! Jamie’s list is aimed at people who consider themselves still to be learning — and is written from the perspective of someone who very much considers himself still to be learning — and schools are by definition 100% that. Students are always looking for good resources, particularly off-the-beaten-path ones.
Support the work with a paid subscription! I’ve priced it so inexpensively that I think a lot of people are like, “Eh, my $10/mo won’t make a difference, so I’ll blow it off.” But here’s the thing: the power of crowdfunding is in the crowd. Jamie’s list is at its heart funded by a open crowdsourcing effort — everyone can contribute according to their ability, in a no-pressure kind of way.
This allows me to keep the list free for people with limited means — which described me for the first 25 years of my career in music, and still sometimes describes our situation — and it allows people who have a little extra to pay it forward to the people who can’t afford to pitch in.
If you’d prefer not to support via Substack, you can support via our Misfit Stars patron community, which also accepts recurring monthly donations.Work with me! This would really be the best outcome — because that way I would get to work on music with you! Which is after all why I’m involved in any of this — for the music.
Depending on the project, sometimes I produce (or remote-produce), sometimes I do an “additional production and mix” sort of approach via dropbox, and sometimes I just master records. I love being involved in all of the above ways and would love to hear what you’re working on.
Thank you so much to those of you who have asked! — jamie
