How to support Jamie's list: an FAQ
First, a small series of questions:
Do you get value from this list?
Does it inspire you / challenge you / provoke you / give you new ideas to try?
Do you want to be part of helping support it?
Well, that’s great! You can do that! Just click here to convert from a free subscription to an inexpensive supporting subscription:
“But Jamie, I don’t want to do a Substack subscription.”
That’s fine! You may also support Jamie’s list here.
“But Jamie, I can’t afford a subscription; I’m extremely poor!”
That’s relatable, and we completely understand. If this is your situation, please stay on the free plan! The way that Shannon and I fund everything we do is “from each according to their ability, to each according to their need.” Put another way: the people who can afford to support our work make it available to everyone, including the people who can’t afford it.
“But Jamie, I don’t want to support Jamie’s list. I like the list, and I can afford to support it no problem … I just don’t feel like it.”
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
“But Jamie, you have a trust fund, right? I just kind of assume that anyone who does music full time must have independent wealth / an inheritance / well-to-do parents / a spouse with a cushy job / etc.”
That’s a reasonable assumption in 2024! It’s increasingly hard to support oneself with music; the 1% are finding increasingly innovative ways to transfer money generated by artists’ work from our pockets into theirs. The CEO of Spotify has a personal net worth of nearly five billion dollars! Every single penny of that stolen directly from an artist. But no; remarkably, Shannon and I began our relationship in debt, have never inherited money, and support ourselves entirely with music-related endeavors. Including this one.
A simple flowchart
I haven’t done a push for support since the holidays. Meanwhile, Jamie’s list has grown to an archive of 297 posts, each with a creative idea for how to approach DIY music production.
