I'm not an expert
I feel like I should mention this every so often: I want to take great pains to underscore the idea that I don’t consider myself an expert.
I’m not writing this newsletter from a position of expertise. I’m writing it from the point of view of a curious, engaged person with decades of relevant experience. Which is different! The myth of expertise exists on a narrow spectrum between unhealthy and toxic, and I want no part of it.
I’m merely a working musician, whose main work consists of getting ever better at making recordings. I’m sharing my thoughts along the way in hopes that they will be helpful to someone else on their path. That’s it.
Take my thoughts onboard at your own risk. Not that there’s a whole lot of risk in trying out music production ideas, but you get the point. You’re the only person who’s an expert on your process. If something I say doesn’t resonate, discard it. If you find your curiosity sparked, investigate.
