It's not a de-esser, it's a de-harsher
De-essers are good for helping with ess sounds. Everyone knows that — it’s in the name!
But, if you think about it from a technical point of view: de-essers are frequency-conscious compressors.
And this makes them useful for a ton of tasks!
Harsh cymbals? De-esser.
Too much hi-hat in the overheads? De-esser.
Too much aggression in the snare drum? De-esser.
Guitar has some ear-piercing frequencies? De-esser.
Gentle pad needs to be even gentler? De-esser.
Piano sound has some weird overtones? De-esser.
Need a good de-esser? I like this one and this one and this one. They all have functional overlap and they’re each better for individual specific tasks. As with other utility-type tools, it’s good to own a variety.
