Making little moves
I’ve realized that what I like to do in mixes is to force the listener to constantly be reevaluating the relationships between sounds, and therefore their relationship with the song.
To this end, I find that I’m constantly doing little micro-automations. Half a dB up for this particular synth moment; 1 dB less into the reverb send on that particular low vocal note. My mixes typically end up peppered with dozens if not hundreds of these little subliminal moments.
This technique also has the lovely side-benefit of making a production sound much more dynamic and alive, even if you can’t put your finger on exactly why.
Keep it moving, pal — jamie
