Mute different things

Here’s a great little trick for getting a fresh perspective on something you’re working on: mute random things. Prime candidates:

• bass

• drums

• keyboards

• vocal master (i.e., all vocals. You are working with a vocal master, right?)

• lead vocal only

And just listen through the song! It’s wild how you can miss a bunch of stuff that isn’t quite working until you hear the song with the vocals muted. And then all of a sudden it gets very clear.
