Only work loud when things are working well
In yesterday’s post, I talked about how I like to work loud at the beginning of a mix and quietly at the end.
But there’s one important detail that I want to add to this: I don’t turn the volume up in the beginning phase of things until I have a good rough mix in place.
It’s good to let some volume get you into the groove; but it can be disorienting to try to get your rough balances right when you’re working loud; the potential outcome is that you “bake in” balances that actually aren’t working all that well.
So: quick get at least your gains in order, maybe your rough EQs if necessary, and then start bumping it. That’s my recipe.
