The #1 rule of mixing

Apropos of my post from a few days ago about brute-forcing a mix, our dear friend JT messaged me to remind me of the #1 rule of mixing:

“Change shit until it sounds good.”

And of course the corollary would be:

“If it doesn’t sound good yet, keep changing shit.”

And a third angle:

“Don’t change shit if your ears aren’t telling you it needs it.”

This is a good reminder, right? The song is the forest … but the work of mixing can be so tree-heavy that we can sometimes lose sight of it.
