The Fermi principle
I read this great quote today from the physicist Enrico Fermi:
There are two possible outcomes: If the result confirms the hypothesis, then you've made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you've made a discovery.
And: I realized that this is precisely how I feel about experimenting with audio gear!
If I hear an issue that I want to address with an audio track, and I put a plugin on the track with the aim of addressing that issue, one of precisely two things will happen.
It will do the thing I’d hoped (hooray!).
It won’t do what I was expecting, and I will learn something. Which: also hooray!
The point being: there are no wrong answers when you’re experimenting with audio gear. There’s just a neverending world of enjoyable learning.
