You can do this

I got the absolute loveliest message from someone today on Mastodon. (Someone from Denmark! The internet will never stop feeling magical.)

They said:

I just embarked upon my first attempt at mixing beyond ihavenoideawhatimdoing.jpg last night, and it's your and your list's fault, Jamie!

First: this made my entire day. The idea that someone would feel empowered by this little resource we’re building here together is so humbling to me. Emotional.

Also: this is the entire point of this list. The point is that YOU CAN DO THIS. You can mix. You can produce. You can do mastering. You can do all of this! The power is in you. It’s always been in you. You just have to connect with your power, and nurture it over time.

My perfect world is one in which people don’t approach me to work on records with them because they feel like they can’t record / mix / produce / whatever themselves, but rather simply because they want to have my perspective in their recordings. An egoless meeting of equals, in which two people who could both do this all themselves choose to join forces because doing so creates something bigger than either of them.

And I want this for you, too. I want you to be one of those equals, empowered and fearless. That’s why I’m sending you these little ideas. To help you realize that none of this is magic. It’s just a series of choices, made hopefully with care and love and a little technical knowhow. That’s all. You can absolutely do this. Keep going.
